Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion of the world and winner of the 2005 PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix. Born in Curitiba, Brazil, he began his martial arts training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and muay thai at the age of sixteen alongside his older brother Murillo “Ninja" Rua at the legendary Chute Boxe academy. Head coach Rudimar Fedrigo, jiu jitsu coach Nino Schembri, and muay thai coach Rafael Cordeiro led him to a 12-1 career in PRIDE Fighting Championship’s 205lbs division including one night knockout wins over Alistair Overeem and Ricardo Arona.

Shogun opened his own training camp Universidade Da Luta (University of Fighting) in his hometown in 2007 with his family and K-1 kickboxer Andre “Dida” Amade. Since then he has changed camps from Rafael Cordeiro at Kings MMA in California to a stint with Demian Maia in Sao Paulo.
